Spanish Flamenco Guitar Callaghans Fine Art Shrewsbury
In November of 2022 I had the pleasure of playing at Callaghans of Shrewsbury.
Callaghans exhibited works by the Spanish artist Ignacio Trelis.
The event was a private viewing.
In their meticulous planning they decided that a Spanish Flamenco guitarist would be an appropriate accompaniment to the evening.
Ignacio very kindly gave me some time to talk through his work and to encourage me to play my best flamenco pieces.
In this exhibition the works on display by Ignacio Trelis were not examples of Spanish culture.
In fact, they are inspired by his travels throughout the world.
Nonetheless Ignacio explained to me that my Spanish flamenco is indeed quite appropriate.
This because the core emotions in flamenco are the same that we see in his expressive paintings.
With this understanding I felt the freedom and the responsibility to play authentic flamenco guitar music.
That is to say I did not feel a pressure to to seek a way for my Spanish music to be descriptive of the visual art.
For me, the key is that my music should be valid by its own quality.
Yet at the same time it must compliment the work by the artist.
It was an honour that Callaghans of Shrewsbury chose me as a flamenco guitarist.
Playing for the exhibition was a joy.
